By Mabvuto Kambuwe:
Malawi national women’s football team Captain, Tabitha Chawinga, was on target as her Chinese Women’s Super League side Jiangsu Sunning defeated Beijing Phoenix 3-2 on Saturday.
Phoenix are South Africa national women’s football team star Thembi Kgatlana’s team.
Kgatlana is the current Caf Women’s Footballer of the Year and plays in China alongside her compatriot Linda Motlhalo.
Tabitha scored and provided an assist to help Sunning collect maximum points in the league opener whereas Kgatlana was also on target but ended on the losing side.
The Malawian said she felt great after helping her team to collect maximum points.
“We just need to maintain our form so that we win the league this season,” she said.
Tabitha and Kgatlana are expected to miss the Cosafa Championship slated for July 31 to August 11 in Nelson Mandela Bay, South Africa.
Tabitha has already won a double in China with her club in the new season after clinching the Chinese Women’s Football Championship and FA Cup titles.
She has so far scored 23 goals in 12 games and won two Golden Boot awards.
Tabitha was also phenomenal last season after scoring 17 goals.
