Tabitha leapfrogs Temwa

Malawi Women’s National Football Team Captain Tabitha Chawinga was on target as her Chinese Women’s Super League side Wuhan Jiangda thrashed Shanghai Shengli 4-1 at Tazihu Football Training Centre on Tuesday.

This has taken Tabitha’s goal tally to seven, one above her younger sister Temwa, who played in defence.

The two sisters went into the match as joint leaders with six goals each.

Tabitha was the biggest star of the match as she also provided an assist.

Yao Wei, Beatriz Zanaratto Joao and Wang Shuang were also on target for Wuhan.

Tabitha said she was excited with her exploits.

“It feels great to score and help my team collect full points. However, I am not focusing on personal glory. My target is to help my team to successfully defend the league title,” she said.

Wuhan are also on course to defending the title after starting the five-team play-offs with a win.

The teams fighting for the title in the play-offs are Wuhan, Shengli, Zhouyue, Jiangsu and Guangzhou Meizhou Hakka.

Tabitha joined Wuhan last year after three years with Jiang Sunning.

At Sunning, she won the Chinese Women’s Footballer of the Year accolade in 2018 and 2019.

The former DD Sunshine star also helped the club win a treble for the first time in its history.
