Zambia Football Association (Faz) has decided against renewing Chipolopolo’s Belgian Coach Sven Vandenbroek’s contract beyond next month when it expires—around the same time that Flames’ Ronny van Geneugden’s (RVG) deal runs its course.
Not only is RVG also Belgian but his results in the 2019 Africa Cup of Nations (Afcon) Group B qualifiers are similar to those of Vandenbroek in pool K.
Vandenbroek won and drew once while losing thrice in the qualifiers, their next month’s meeting with Namibia being merely academic.
This is also the case with RVG whose charges host Morocco next month in a dead-rubber, having lost 3-0 to them away, 1-0 in Cameroon, 2-1 in Comoros Islands and drew 0-0 at home against the Indomitable Lions.
Malawi started the campaign with a 1-0 win over Comoros.
Coincidently, Malawi and Zambia anchor their respective groups with four points each.
Overall, RVG has won twice in 20 games since being hired in 2017.
Zambia hired Vandenbroek in July 2017.
However, the only difference is that while Football Association of Malawi (Fam) insists they are yet to decide on RVG’s contract, Faz has been so decisive.
In a press release, Faz General Secretary, Adrian Kashala, says the decision to sack Vandenbroek follows a resolution which their executive committee made over the weekend.
“Mr Vandenbroek’s last assignment as Zambia national team coach will be the Afcon 2019 Group K game between Zambia and Namibia to be played on March 23, at which we expect nothing but a resounding win over Namibia,” Kashala states.
Faz has recruited former international Aggrey Chiyangi as the first assistant coach with Numba Munamba as his deputy.
