Malawi Handball Association’s (Maha) Southern Region Chapter has said it is impressed with the standards of play among junior and senior players.

The committee’s member, Sophie Kathewere, made the remarks after staging a day-long Presidential Initiative on Sports tournament at Central High School in Blantyre on Saturday.

“We staged the tournament in order to select female players that should represent the country at the annual International Handball Federation Zone Six Championship next year either in Swaziland or Botswana,” Kathewere said.

Twelve teams competed in ladies’ and men’s sections of the tournament.

In the junior ladies’ division, Limbe Community Day Secondary School emerged first and were followed by Ndirande Club and St Kizito on second and third places, respectively.

In the junior men’s division, St Kizito were crowned champions with Ndirande as runners-up.

The battle for the championship in the senior boys’ category saw Ndirande winning the accolade whereas Limbe ended on second position.

Other teams that competed in the event were Chitsime and Makhetha.

Maha opted to give handballs to top-three teams in each division as a way of motivating the sides which struggle for equipment.
