Brave Hearts Basketball Club, formerly known as Rejects, will be launched officially on November 29, 2015 at Civo Basketball Court in Lilongwe.

The club’s chairperson, Griffin Kalua, yesterday said the launch would be spiced up by an international tournament involving Malawian and Tanzanian teams.

East Zone I, who recently won an inter-province championship in Tanzania, and West Zone III, are the Tanzanian sides coming to grace the launch.

“We anticipate an exciting event and we urge all basketball lovers to come in large numbers and be part of the big event,” Kalua said.

The purpose behind the team, according to Kalua, was to develop the game of basketball through sponsorships, coaching clinics, exchange visits and improvement of basketball infrastructure in schools and institutions.

“We have actually procured some equipment and started selling, but we are looking for a proper place where people will be coming to buy the equipment,” he said.

“All proceeds from the sales will be going towards the development of basketball.”

Basketball used to be the most followed sport after football in Malawi, but over the decades the sport has declined due to factors ranging from poor administration to lack of support.

The team is being bankrolled by G.Y Imports and Exports—a local company dealing in furniture, ICT equipment, building materials, stationary and other office/ household items.
