Tanzania Volleyball Association has invited Malawi’s volleyball clubs to participate in Nyerere International Volleyball Championship in Dar es Salaam from October 10 to 14.
Tanzania will host the tournament at National Indoor Stadium in honour of the East African country’s founding president, Julius Nyerere.
Volleyball Association of Malawi General Secretary, Jairos Nkhoma, said the invitation was for men’s and ladies’ teams.
“We have extended the invitation to our regional leagues who will, in turn, notify their teams about the event. It is important that our teams should take international games seriously because they help players to gain the much-needed exposure,” Nkhoma said.
He said participating teams will meet their own travel, food and accommodation costs in addition to paying an equivalent of K150,000 participation fee.
Central Region Volleyball League General Secretary, Trust Mtegha, described the invitation as timely, saying participation in international tournaments helps clubs to improve their performance.
“The game keeps changing everyday in terms of rules and playing standards. We may be playing among ourselves with the belief that we are doing well.
“But we get shocked to learn that we are not good enough when meeting opponents from outside the country. So, it is important that our teams should go and play,” Mtegha said.
The competition’s winning team will receive an equivalent of K340,000 (one million Tanzanian Shillings), with half the amount going to the first runners-up.
Kamuzu Barracks were the last Malawian club to participate in an international competition when they played at the 2015 Zone VI Senior Volleyball Club Championship in Swaziland.
