Highly-rated Tanzanian female golfer, Angel Eaton, underlined her class when she won 2019 Malawi Ladies Golf Open Stroke Championship at Lilongwe Golf Club over the weekend.
Playing off handcap three, Eaton finished champion with 252 gross, beating fellow Tanzanian Vick Elias (handicap six) who got a gross of 258 .
There was no place for a Malawian golfer in the top five as Zambian Carol Masisani came third with 265gross, followed by Zimbabwe golfer Loice Chingono who grossed 268.
Zimbabwean golfer Aulia Alfazema came fifth with a gross of 270 whereas Malawian Regina Mwanza was sixth with a score of 286.
In her victory speech, the Kogalo Golf Club golfer said the victory did not come on a silver platter.
“The golf course was tough for me, but I remained calm. It is a nice experience to play in Malawi and I hope to come back one day,” Eaton said.
It was a good tournament for the Tanzanian golfer, having also won longest drive on hole 18, whereas Chingono also won the same accolade on hole 11.
Eaton has won several golf tournaments including the Uganda Open three times and also the 2018 IBB Nigeria Ladies Open.
In the A Division, local golfer Stella Ng’oma triumphed with 293 gross followed by another Malawian Connie Karuku with 296 gross.
The men’s category spiced up the ladies tournament, which saw Gershom Chima finishing as the winner with 88 gross followed by Thakor Sanjay and Chris Mzokomera on 84 and 77 gross, respectively.
Several companies including Old Mutual, Sunbird, Data Com, Toyota Malawi, LonAgro, National Bank of Malawi, Corporate Colours and Sparc Systems Limited sponsored the event.
