Blantyre-based athletics club, Tauka, has organised a national invitational tournament to be held at Andiamo Campus in Balaka on Saturday.

The club has so far raised about K400,000 and intends to raise an additional K300,000 before the event.

One of the club’s founding member, Moses M’kondowe, said they decided to organise the event following lack of local competitions which appears to cripple the development of the sport.

“It’s a pity that as a nation we seldom athletics championship. It is unlike in the past when we were having several events. As a club we realised that we can’t progress in absence of competitions. We therefore decided to organise an invitational tournament that should give our athletes and others an opportunity to hone skills,” he said.

M’kondowe, while appreciating the support they got from wellwishers, asked for more aid to meet their budget.

“The support has been good and we are optimistic that others will come on board and support us before we stage the championship. We want to establish strong ties with well-wishers because we believe that we can help each. Through this championship, individuals and organisations will have chance to market their goods, services and brand,” he said.

The invitational tournament will attract athletes from Kamuzu Institute for Sports, Andiamo and Police clubs among others.

Meanwhile, M’kondowe said they were delighted with the progress Tauka has made since its formation.

“The first crop of athletes we identified was poached by our colleagues from High Performance Centre at College of Medicine,” he said.
