Chisomo Taulo made history over the weekend when he won the 2018 Zambia Open Plate final held in Kitwe.
He is the first Malawian to win squash silverware in Zambia.
Having lost in the first round, Taulo overcame Joseph Kabwe, who is from the Zambian Army Squash Club, by three sets to one.
Sounding surprised, Joe Kawimbe from the Zambian army team said it was unbelievable that a Malawian could win a Zambian tournament, let alone the prestigious Zambia Open.
Zambian army team invests a lot in squash and the country’s national team participates in international tournaments such as the Commonwealth Games regularly.
Zambian Kelvin Ndlovu, who is South Africa-based and ranked number two, won the main event after defeating compatriot Manda Chilambwe, who is based in South Africa.
Players from Zimbabwe, South Africa, Namibia, Malawi and Zambia participated in the tournament.
