Tay Grin gets Afrima nomination

Tay Grin has been nominated in the category of Best Male Artiste in Southern Africa in this year’s All Africa Music Awards (Afrima) for the song ‘Tola’ which features Tanzanian artist Vanessa Mdee.

The ‘Tola’ music video has been enjoying massive airplay on DStv’s Trace Africa channel.

The Best Male Artiste in Southern Africa category also has veteran South African trumpeter Hugh Masekela with his track ‘Shango’ and AKA also from South Africa with his song ‘The World Is Yours.’

The others on the list are Nasty C from South Africa, Emtee from South Africa, Jah Prayzah from Zimbabwe and Nduduzo Makhathini from South Africa.

This is the first time for Tay Grin to get an Afrima nomination.

The artist has soared this year and in May he grabbed three awards in the inaugural Nyasa Music Awards namely Best Male Artist, Best Video and Best Live Act.

Tay Grin who is currently in Europe on a world tour which has seen him performing in Iceland, United States of America, South Africa, Ireland and England said yesterday that it was a great honour to be nominated.

“I don’t recall that I have ever been nominated in the Afrima Awards. This is the first time for me. It’s a great honour to be considered one of the best act in Southern Africa,” he said.

He said the nomination was not for him alone but for the country.

“This is good news for Malawi and the creative industry as a whole as we continue to conquer the world stage. And as the voting lines open people need to vote so that I bring this award home,” Tay Grin said.

He said he was looking forward to more nominations but also awards.

Tay Grin’s award comes barely a month after the country’s South Africa-based singer Zani Chiumia better known as Zani Challe was nominated in the African Muzik Magazine Awards (Afrimmas) whose event will be held in October.

Zani Challe has been nominated in the category of Best Newcomer.

The singer well known for her song ‘Single Tonight’ which she featured Nigerian star Patoranking last year was nominated in the Afrima but she failed to get an award.

The country also received a nomination in the Afrima 2014 through Lawi, creator of Amaona Kuchedwa track but he failed to grab the award.

Tay Grin who returns home on August 17 will be hoping to grab the award this time and make history.
