Teachers concerned with pension issues

By Faith Kamtambe:

Teachers Union of Malawi (Tum) Secretary General, Charles Kumchenga, has expressed concern over the government’s silence on issues surrounding contributory pension scheme.

Kumchenga said teachers in the country remit money to the scheme but do not get any clue as to how much they have contributed towards the scheme or indeed check their balances.

“Surprisingly, the government is not issuing account details for teachers to be checking their balances or indeed what they have contributed to the scheme.

“We had a meeting with Ministry of Finance and Ministry of Education, Science and Technology officials on March 14 2019 and we agreed that, come March 30, all teachers would have their bank account details so that, from next month, teachers should be able to check their balances,” he said.

Meanwhile, education ministry spokesperson, Lindiwe Chide, has said the government is working on the matter.

“The information was disseminated to all officers at the headquarters but, being a new thing, there may be need for us to go back and explain further so they can understand better how much they are contributing to their pension,” she said.
