Team Malawi hits 21 medals

SHINING FOR MALAWI—Saukire

Team Malawi’s performance at the ongoing Region 5 Youth Games in Lilongwe continued to improve, with the medal count hitting 21 Thursday.

The team added two gold, one silver and two bronze medals.

Runners Mphatso Saukire won gold in the 800 metres (m) men’s T12 category whereas Eunice Phiso also lifted gold in the women’s section.

Doreen Masanza won silver in the 100m women’s category with Shakira Saizi clinching bronze in the 100m women’s T12.

There was more success for Malawi as Samuel Bosco won bronze in the 100m men’s T11.

Following the athletes’ impressive showing, Malawi now has three gold, nine silver and nine bronze medals.

Malawi National Council of Sports Public Relations and Communications Officer Edgar Ntulumbwa said he remains optimistic that Malawi will grab more medals.

“The games are still on and we will see what happens as we draw towards the end,” Ntulumbwa said.

Judokas Pemphero Tayali and Madalitso Kachule also did Malawi proud by winning bronze.

Judo Association of Malawi General Secretary Osbourne Banda said some of the judokas struggled due to lack of experience.

“We believe it was possible to win more medals if our players had more exposure. But all is not lost as we have something to show for our efforts,’’ Banda said.

During the 2021 edition in Lesotho, Malawi won a record 29 medals.

Yesterday’ top three on the medals list was as follows:

South Africa: 36 gold, 18 silver and 10 bronze

Angola:11 gold, 10 silver and 10 bronze

Zambia:7 gold, 10 silver and 11 bronze
