Team Malawi loses four gold medals

Team Malawi has suffered a huge blow after African Union Sports Council (AUSC) Region 5 Youth Games organisers refused to recognise medals which the hosts won in some events, Malawi News Sport can reveal.

On Thursday, Team Malawi won two gold medals through Mphatso Saukile in men’s 800m T12 and Eunice Phiso in 800m women’s T13.

Team Malawi also won two gold medals Friday but the organisers indicated that they will not count on the final medal table as the events featured less than five countries.

According to the organisers, they are recognising medals won in events where a minimum of five countries participated.

Malawi National Sports Council (MNCS) Public Relations and Communications Officer Edgar Ntulumbwa confirmed the development, saying it was a huge setback.

“The organisers have indicated that only medals won in events where five or more countries compete do count but in those events where participating teams are four or less, such events do not count,” he said.

On Thursday, Team Malawi had taken its medal tally to 21.

MNCS had set a target of over 29 medals for Team Malawi this year.

Last year during the 2020 Games held in Maseru, Lesotho, Team Malawi won 29 medals with 99 athletes. This year, the team has 227 athletes.
