Team Malawi off to Birmingham July 22

Malawi’s contingent to the 2022 Commonwealth Games in Birmingham, England, leaves the country on July 22 with 22 athletes to compete in five sports disciplines.

The Games begin with an opening ceremony on July 28, with the closing event scheduled for August 28.

Malawi Chef de Mission to the Games Henry Sakala, who is also Malawi Olympic Committee (MOC) Treasurer, said the 22 athletes would go into a final camp training session ahead of departure.

Sakala said Malawi would compete in netball, boxing, athletics, judo and swimming.

“Our preparations have now reached the climax and, shortly, the team is going into final camp training. The final list of athletes making the trip will be known during the team unveiling ceremony which will take place any time. So, be assured that everything is on course,” he said.

Netball Association of Malawi General Secretary Isaac Chimwala said the Malawi National Netball Team is looking forward to the final camp training.

“We are expecting better performances from the Queens in this competition. The coach had time to sharpen her team in two tournaments and we believe this arrangement will bear fruits in Birmingham.

“Our preparations are continuing as we finalise requirements for the Queens to represent the country in Birmingham. We are in touch with MOC and there is progress on the ground,” Chimwala said. As part of their preparations, the Queens participated in two tri-nation tournaments in Blantyre and Cape Town, South Africa, with mixed fortunes.

In Blantyre, Malawi faced Zimbabwe and Namibia, winning all matches but lost to England and South Africa with wide margins in Cape Town.
