Teams doing final touches

Super League teams are doing final touches to their preparations for the new season which is expected to kick off on May 6.

Seven matches have been lined up on the opening weekend of the season.

Topping the menu is a match involving defending champions, Kamuzu Barracks and cup specialists, Be Forward Wanderers, in Lilongwe on Saturday.

Ahead of the season, most Super League teams played strength-testing matches over the weekend.

Rookies Masters Security defeated Nambuma United 4-2, courtesy of goals from Sam Gunda (2), Yatina Juma and Abiyomi Akanji.

Masters Head Coach, Benjamin Kumwenda, yesterday said his side was geared up for the top-flight league.

“We are satisfied with the progress of the team and we hope we will do well in the league,” said Kumwenda, whose team will be without six players due to injury.

Malumbo Gondwe, Eneya Banda and Ndaziona Chilemba are some of the major doubts ahead of the season.

In another warm-up, Nyasa Big Bullets defeated Mchinji Select 1-0 on Saturday, thanks to Henry Kabichi’s goal from the penalty spot. Bullets also beat Magomero 7-0 on Sunday.

Bullets Assistant Coach, Elijah Kananji, said the team was slowly getting shape.

“We are still trying different combinations but we are happy with the commitment of the players,” he said.

Elsewhere, Silver Strikers’ Coach, Lovemore Fazili, was optimistic ahead of the season.

“Everybody is geared up and ready for the new season. We have assembled a good squad which can challenge for all cups and the TNM Super League championship,” he said.

In other games lined up for this weekend, Bullets meet Chitipa United at Mzuzu Stadium on Saturday then Moyale Barracks on Sunday at the same venue.

Epac (Civil Sporting Club) will host Mafco at Civo Stadium on Sunday whereas Silver play Azam Tigers at Kamuzu Stadium.
