Teams down play bizarre Chipiku League results

Results of two matches in the 2022 Chipiku League Premier Division have raised more questions than answers.

The football fraternity was shocked after Kamuzu Barracks Reserve registered a 17-1 victory over Extreme FC whereas Kawinga FC claimed a 19-0 win over Ngwanje.

Despite winning their respective matches on the final day of the play-offs, Kawinga and KB Reserve failed to book places in the final round.

“The Chipiku results leave a lot to be desired. The results might have been manipulated to influence qualification. This is why most teams when they qualify to the elite league, don’t survive,” sports analyst Parley Chinyama said.

However, Extreme General Secretary Kondwani Kayira said the team had internal problems before the fixture.

“Some of the key players boycotted the match as they were demanding unpaid game bonuses. It is painful to lose in that way but we will do better in the final round,’’ he said.

Extreme made history for good reasons when they reached the semi-finals of the 2022 FDH Bank Cup but lost to Nyasa Big Bullets Reserve 2-1 at Kamuzu Stadium.

On his part, Kawinga Coach Harry Saidi said the result against Ngwanje was a true reflection of the match.

“We were too good for them. They had nothing to lose and they gave up,” Saidi said.

Central Region Football Association (CRFA) General Secretary Bernard Chiwiriwiri Harawa and Public Relations Officer Kondwani Kandiado did not answer their phones.

Silver Strikers Reserve finished top in Group A with 20 points, four points above second-placed Mbabvi United.

St Gabriel Medicals finished on position three with 15 points, just one point above Wimbe FC.

However, Wimbe and Gabriel will wait for today to know their fate.

In Group B, Extreme finished top with 19 points, just one point above second-placed Support Battalion.

Luanar FC qualified for the final round with 17 points. The draw for the final round was conducted on Monday at Civo Club House in Lilongwe. Following the draw, Extreme will meet Silver at Mchinji Community Ground whereas Luanar will face Support Battalion.

Mbabvi will either meet Wimbe or St Gabriel.
