The four teams that will compete in this weekend’s Football Association of Malawi (Fam) Charity Shield at Bingu National Stadium in Lilongwe finalised their preparations with friendly matches Sunday.

Fam has lined up Be Forward Wanderers, Nyasa Big Bullets, Kamuzu Barracks (KB) and Silver Strikers to officially kick off the new season through the competition which starts on Saturday and ends on Sunday.

KB thrashed Linthipe Three Stars 3-0 in Dedza while Silver Strikers walloped Salima Select by the same margin.

The soldiers scored through Joel Chipofya (2) and Chimwemwe Chisambi while Binwell Katinji, Collen Nkhulambe and Zikani Kasambara scored for Silver.

TNM Super League champions Be Forward Wanderers were held to a barren draw by Civil Sporting Club after a 1-0 win over Masters Security on Saturday.

Bullets travelled to Mulanje Park Stadium for a date with Azam Tigers and goals from Henry Kabichi and Bright Munthali helped them to triumph 2-0.

The four qualified to play in the season’s first competition on the basis of their winning silverware last season.

Wanderers Team Manager, Steve Madeira, said the two friendlies have highlighted his team’s scoring problems which need to be solved ahead of the team’s tie with Silver.

“In general terms, we can say we are ready. But we will take advantage of midweek training to work on our scoring problems. Our strikers have not scored enough goals in the pre-season. So we have to find solutions before we meet Silver,” Madeira said.

Bullets assistant Coach, Eliya Kananji, whose team will face KB in the competition, said he is satisfied with his players’ performance.

“We have prepared thoroughly and I cannot complain. The players are in good shape and we are just looking forward to getting our season started,” Kananji said.

Members of technical panels for Silver and KB were not readily available for comment as they were travelling back to Lilongwe from Salima and Dedza, respectively.

Bullets are in the competition after winning the Carlsberg Cup last year while Silver lifted the Airtel Top 8 Cup to qualify.

KB will also be at the event after claiming the Fisd Challenge Cup.

The next competition to kick off after the Charity Shield will be the Super League, which will roll off on April 14.
