Tears as Matthews Chikaonda’s body arrives

By Macdonald Thom:

There was sadness at Kamuzu International Airport (Kia) Sunday when people welcomed the body of former minister of Finance, Mathews Chikaonda.

After arrival, the body was taken to the deceased’s home in Area 43 in Lilongwe, where a funeral ceremony was held before departure for Mtakataka in Dedza District.

Chikaonda died on October 30 at Loma Linda University Medical Centre in the United States (US) after a long battle with cancer.

A representative of the family, James Chikaonda, said the former Reserve Bank of Malawi (RBM) governor always stood for the family.

“He always put family first. He was there for all of us,” Chikaonda said.

He also expressed gratitude to all people who supported the family since the former Press Corporation chief executive officer died.

“We thank you very much for your moral and financial support,” Chikaonda said

One of the late Chikaonda’s friends, Charles Chuka, who is also former RBM governor, described him as a man who always fought for the country’s economic transformation.

“He will be remembered for his 10-point plan. The late Professor Mathews Chikaonda will also be remembered for a budget statement he delivered in 2000. He had good ideas for this country although most of his ideas were not implemented,” Chuka said.

Apart from Chuka, other people present at the ceremony in Area 43 were RBM governor Dalitso Kabambe, and former governors Francis Pelekamoyo and Elias Ngalande.

Minister of Lands, Housing and Urban Development, Jean Kalilani, former chief justice Lovemore Munlo and US Ambassador Virginia Palmer were also among those present.

Burial is expected to take place today at Tembetembe Village, Mtakataka, in Dedza.
