Global Lead Coordinator for Covid-19 Vaccine Delivery Partnership Ted Chaiban has arrived in the country today for a three-day official visit aimed at accelerating Covid-19 vaccination.

His visit according to Health rights activist Maziko Matemba is an opportunity for Malawi to highlight the challenges the vaccination process has been facing that has resulted in Malawi being among the least vaccinated countries in the world.

“Malawi among the challenges the country faced in the vaccination is support to social mobilisation for people to get the vaccine. We were only getting the vaccines without financial support to get the vaccines delivered” Matemba said.

Malawi is among the least Covid-19 vaccinated countries in the world according to statistics by the World Health Organisation. Out of 19 million Malawians, only about 1.2 million have been vaccinated with the first dose and 1.1 million have been fully vaccinated with two doses to date.

In a joint statement released by WHO and Unicef, Chaiban’s visit aims at accelerating Covid-19 vaccination and resource mobilisation to curb the Covid-19 pandemic.

During the visit, Chaiban will engage in joint high-level advocacy meetings with government, development partners, and other key stakeholders to support the acceleration of Covid-19 vaccination coverage and ensure that the response to Covid-19 remains a top priority for Malawi.
