Temwa Chawinga off to Sweden

Striker Temwa Chawinga looks set to transfer her deadly strike partnership with her elder sister Tabitha from the Malawi Women’s National Football Team to Swedish club, Kvarnsvedens IK.

After starring for the She- Flames, scoring three goals in three games at the Cosafa Championship in Zimbabwe, Temwa was expected to fly out to Sweden from Bulawayo yesterday, alongside Tabitha.

The She-Flames Coach, Stuart Mbolembole, confirmed in a telephone interview from Bulawayo yesterday that the sisters were left behind.

“Playing in Sweden using better facilities would help develop her game. She is equally good. She has a big heart and is a fighter,” Mbolembole said about Temwa, who is the top scorer for Blantyre Zero Football Team of the Southern Region Women’s Football League.

Last month, Blantyre Zero owner Sadiki Malinga told The Nation newspaper that Temwa was waiting for a work permit from the Swedish Embassy in Zimbabwe.

In July, DT newspaper of Sweden quoted Kvarnsvedens Chairperson, Olle Davidsson, confirming that Tabitha,21, would be joined by her 18-year-old sister on a short-term contract.

“We will start with a shorter contract in the first season, but of course, we have an option to extend the contract if everything goes well. Right now, we do not know much about her, but we can go on based on what Tabitha says about her sister,” Davidsson said.

“Of course, it has been a big advantage for us. Temwa will live with Tabitha and it is of course, an advantage when she will enter the field of play and integrate in society.”

In 2015, Tabitha signed for Kvarnsvedens from Swedish lower league side Krokom / Dvärsätts IF where she was top scorer with 43 goals.

The sisters will make it three Europe-based players in the She- Flames as Captain, Chisomo Kazisonga, plays in Austria for Porta Altera.
