Temwa vows to rival Tabitha


Malawi women’s national football team striker Tabitha Chawinga has promised to compete for golden boot in her debut season in the Chinese Women’s League.

Temwa, younger sister to Scorchers captain Tabitha had a winning debut for Wuhan FC as she provided an assist in her team’s 2 -1 victory over Henan over the weekend.

Temwa said, while helping the club to win the league was her ultimate goal, she would also fight for all accolades including the golden boot.


“It feels great to play my first competitive game for Wuhan and I provided an assist although I came from the bench. I would like to win the league and also the golden boot award. I know my sister is a top player and she wants to win everything but I will try my best,” she said.

Temwa who joined Wuhan after spending two years in the Swedish League with Kvarnsvveden IK where she scored 35 goals in the league to win the golden boot last season.

The Chinese Women’s Football League resumed over the weekend after a long break due to Covid-19 pandemic.


Tabitha opened the season with a single goal as her side Jiang Sunning registered a 3-2 win over HeBei on Sunday.

Tabitha, who facilitated her sister’s move to China, said Temwa has all attributes to do well in the Chinese League.

“Temwa started the game on the bench but she provided an assist and I am happy with her performance. She is a good striker and I am sure if she settles she will do well,” said Tabitha who last season helped Sunning to win a treble.

Tabitha will be hoping to continue ruling the Chinese women’s League having been voted as the Player of the Year for a second year in a row.

In 2019, Tabitha won the golden boot award having scored 12 goals as Sunning also clinched the Chinese League title. In her debut season in China, Tabitha also finished as the top goal scorer with 17 goals, beating three-time African Women Footballer of the Year Asisat Oshoala of Nigeria who is now playing for Spanish side Barcelona.
