Tennis star Banda gets boost ahead of Morocco qualifiers

Malawi’s top junior lawn tennis star Lamesh Banda has received a big boost in his preparations for Africa championship qualifiers set for Morocco in September.

Khaya Volunteers, (KV), a South Africa’s Port Elizabeth – based organization that has experts in various sports fields including tennis, have identified a coach from Netherlands to come and train players in Malawi especially those under the Saved By the Ball (SBB) tennis organization in Mzuzu.

KV Coordinator in Malawi, Justin Banda, confirmed the development to The Daily Times in an interview on Thursday.

The coach, Amon Udo, will jet into the country on June 22 to start his six- week volunteer job in Mzuzu.

Banda said they considered SBB because they are their tennis development partners.

SBB director, Owen Mfune, thanked KV for the gesture.

He said the assistance had come at the right time when Lamesh has a big tournament in Morocco.

“This is will help the coach identify other potential players and also support Banda in his weakest points if he is to do well in the Africa championship qualifiers in Morocco,” said Mfune.

Thirteen-year-old Lamesh said he was training hard ahead of the Morocco trip more especially in some of his weaknesses like finishing point, attack, net volley and smashing.
