Teveta for climate smart agriculture
Technical Entrepreneurial and Vocational Education and Training Authority (Teveta) has said innovative water management technologies can help address effects of climate change in the country.
Teveta Executive Director, Wilson Makulumiza Nkhoma, was speaking on Friday when he toured Enyezini Vocational Training Centre in Mzimba which will be used to train youth and community members on climate smart agriculture.
Nkhoma said this is why his organisation has partnered with Honour to Life (H2L) Malawi to equip farmers with skills on water management and conservation farming among others, for increased sustainable production and income.
“People around the area should get the skills so that they can replicate to produce their own tanks for water harvesting,” Nkhoma said.
Enyezini Vocational Training Centre Principal, Rudahigwa Khonje, said the students are identified using local structures of village development committees.
“It is going to close the skills gap in the community. The community need to change their mindset so that they start running the trainings of agriculture whereby they make more money,” Khonje said.
Enyezini Vocational Training Centre which is being funded by H2L Holland, has irrigation facilities that includes two calabash cisterns with volume capacity of 5, 000 litres each and two water basins.
The facilities apart from pumping water using solar, will also help to harvest rain water.
Meanwhile, 12 people have graduated from the centre after they successfully constructed the calabash cisterns using locally available tools and materials.
One of the trustees of H2L Malawi organisation, Astrid Holtslag, said they have so far spent over K200 million for the project.
