A 45-minute movie titled The Designer which was produced by youthful actress and director Chimwemwe Mkwezalamba screens at University of Malawi – Chancellor College in Zomba Thursday.
Mkwezalamba, who premiered the movie in Blantyre in April last year confirmed the development Wednesday saying this is the second screening after the premiere.
“We are screening the movie at Chancellor College on Thursday. We have done this because we want the students to sample the movie as you know we also have a theatre department,” said Mkwezalamba.
She said she was looking forward to nothing but the best during the screening.
“It’s been sometime looking at the time we premiered the movie. We are also looking at producing DVDs for the movie but we are not yet ready at the moment,” she said.
About The Designer, this is a movie which delves into the story of Sharon played by Vinjeru Kamanga.
Sharon finds herself broke, things are not working, she has lots of debts but a window of opportunity comes up but it is that of designing the wedding of her ex-fiancé played by Daredevils’ GD.
It turns out to be a difficult challenge for her taking into consideration that her fiancé disappeared after she had assisted him only to be greeted by the news of his wedding.
But life had to move on as she later accepted the task and the climax sees GD apologise. He later paid Sharon a fat cheque for her good work.
Sharon links up with another man played by Davie Maseya.
During the premiere film maker Shemu Joyah hailed Mkwezalamba for managing to produce a good movie with low budget.
Mkwezalamba who has also starred in other movies including B’ella indicated that they produced the movie on a zero budget and that she did not even pay some of the actors.
Mkwezalamba produced the movie while she was only 16.
The movie also won the actress an award of Best Emerging Director at the Silicon Valley African Film Festival in USA.
Other actors in The Designer include Simunye Nyamali and female artist Rina.
Mkwezalamba is one of the few actresses, who are taking up a leading role in film making and the others include Joyce Mhango Chavula, who has just received a nomination in the 2016 Africa Magic Viewers Choice Awards (AMVCAs) for her movie titled Lilongwe.
