Football Association of Malawi’s (Fam) efforts to secure a friendly match for the Flames, before facing Taifa Stars of Tanzania next week, have flopped.
FAM’s general secretary Suzgo Nyirenda, during a press briefing Thursday at the Chiwembe Technical Centre in Blantyre, said the association was in touch with their Uganda counterparts over a friendly match, but now such a trip would not be necessary.
He attributed the change to the fact that foreign-based players would not be available, hence defeating the purpose of preparing for Tanzania for the October 7 2015 Fifa World Cup preliminary round first leg.
“It meant that only locals were to play that match against Uganda, so, in consultation with the coach, we thought it wise to cancel the friendly match and concentrate on the Tanzanian game,” Nyirenda said.
He also said the team will depart for Tanzania on October 4 2015.
Meanwhile, Flames coach Ernest Mtawali said he would announce the final travelling squad on October 1 2015.
“The local squad is responding well. It is just unfortunate that will we miss Chiukepo Msowoya. It’s a big blow and I am very disappointed, but I am sure the remaining guys will do the job,” Mtawali said.
