The race has just begun

It is still early days for the full picture to emerge, but if the 2016 version of the TNM Super League is a three-course meal, then what was witnessed over the weekend must have been mere soup or an appetiser.

Seven games, a missed penalty and 14 goals,— including from two recognisable debutants Peter Wadabwa and Victor Nyirenda—sums up the script for the opening stanza of the season.

There is no doubt that the opening games have ignited the race, hence Nyasa Big Bullets are hungry and angry to atone for the blanks they fired at Kamuzu Stadium on Saturday when a Juma Chikwenga-inspired Moyale Barracks defended like demons.

The culprit-in-chief, Muhamad Sulumba, who had his first penalty attempt and a resultant rebound smothered by Chikwenga, should be seething with rage to atone for the unpopular miss when Bullets meet Red Lions at Balaka Stadium on Sunday.

If Sulumba fails to score again, then his doubters will multiply in the red side of town, which should surely be praying for the fast recovery of savior, Chiukepo Msowoya. A week is too long a time at Bullets.

Meanwhile, Sulumba’s former club, Be Forward Wanderers, return to Kamuzu Stadium today when hosting rookies, Dwangwa United, who last week started the race with a 1-0 home loss to Blue Eagles. Debutant Victor Nyirenda scored for the Eagles.

The Nomads, who last season found playing at home hard like a walk on hot coal,

need to prove to the home crowd that their away 2-1 win at Silver Stadium last week was not a mere fluke.

Silver’s reject, Peter Wadabwa, turned the knife on his former employers by scoring the winner, but if you ask Wanderers faithful they cannot wait to watch crowd-favourite, Genki Nakamura, in full flights alongside Nigerian Bello Amos.

Elsewhere, Mafco, who defeated Mzuni 1-0, and the Eagles delivered enough statement that they are worth the watch, but just do not rule out Silver, Civo and Moyale yet– -the chef has just dished out the starters.
