A play titled The Secret Life of Us will be staged at HS Winehouse in Blantyre tonight after its exploits in Mzuzu and Lilongwe the past two weeks.

The play, a collaboration between Mzuzu University Theatre Arts Group (Mutag) and Pamthunzi Arts was written in 2012 by Dipo Katimba and Effie Makepeace.

Katimba, who has starred in several plays starring with Nanzikambe conceived the idea as she was interested in telling the hidden stories of the lives of sex workers.

Together Katimba and Makepeace who were at the time working on women’s arts projects with Nanzikambe Arts, embarked on a research and writing process.

They interviewed and worked with women involved in sex work and transactional sex, finding out about their lives and sharing stories.

The play follows the story of three sex workers, Deborah and Chikondi who have been living and working together for many years, and Mphatso, the young girl who arrives on their doorstep with nowhere else to go.

This is not the first time the play will be staged in Blantyre as it was premiered at Arts Cafe in 2012 and directed by Katimba.

The play directed by Misheck Mzumara has been revisited and now examines how the lives of sex workers and attitudes towards them have changed.

The three actors starring in the play are Maureen Mzumara, Katimba and Mzuni student Chikondi Litete.
