Lions Theatre led by Thlupego Chisiza, Ujeni Theatre Dance and Pamthunzi Arts have a tough task ahead as they set out to win an audience with their latest production Built on the Sand.

Having undergone massive rehearsals for more than six weeks, the three groups are ready to premiere Built on the Sand at Blantyre Cultural Centre (BCC) on Valentine’s Day.

“It is a tall order but we are ready. We have polished all the areas. All we want is to win back the audience. Once they watch this play, they will not regret but rather come out,” actor Mphundu Mjumira said Monday.

The story was hatched by Mjumira and written by Thlupego.

“We deliberately targeted Valentine’s Day because we want families to come out and watch this production. But the most important thing is that we want to show the world that drama is not dead; we are there and committed to our work,” he said.

The experienced actor, who has starred in several plays with Nanzikambe Arts and played a lead role in Theater Konstanz of Germany’s play Fear Eats the Soul, said people will see a professional production.

“We have a team in all the areas; you look at sound, lighting and dance. We have Robert Magasa and Joshua Bhima and we also have poetry in the play done by Yankho Seunda. We also have a rich cast, so it is a serious production,” Mjumira said.

Another veteran female actor, Dipolathu Katimba, said they thought it wise to bring out the play as the country heads to the elections on May 21.

“It is not a political play but we are just looking at our country and the society. People are set to vote on May 21 but what we are saying is that change is for everyone. We need to change at workplaces, schools, homes and any other places if change has to come,” Katimba, said.

The cast also has Blessings Suya, Tendai Scanda and Deborah Tandani.

According to Mjumira, the play has a combination of poetry, drama, music and dance among others.
