Thompson Mtengula tips senior players

Lawn Tennis Association of Malawi (LTAM) Technical Director, Thompson Mtengula, has encouraged senior players to compete in self-sponsored tournaments ahead of the Malawi Open Championship.

Limited competitions for the senior local players undermine their performance in the open, which foreigners, especially from Zambia, dominate.

It is against this background that Mtengula is advocating self-sponsored events.

“It is true that we don’t have adequate competitions for the seniors ahead of the Malawi Open. If we are to compete for medals, then we need the senior players to be active. We can only do this if we come together and organise self-sponsored tournaments,” Mtengula said.

In 2015, Italian volunteer, Egon Tascher, won the championship and, last year, Zambian Edgar Kazembe, reclaimed the title.

However, the case is different in the ladies’ section, whose champion is Mary Luhanga.

Top seeds, James Matewere and Julius Taulo, have since called on their fellow senior players to embrace the idea of a self-sponsored competition and end the dominance of the foreigners.

“I think the coach has a good idea that can help us improve our performance in the Malawi Open Championship. As senior players, we need to support the initiative because it is for our benefit,” Taulo said.
