Three die in a road accident
Three people died in a road accident involving a minibus near Lirangwe Trading Centre along the Zalewa Road in Blantyre, on Tuesday
The Nissan Caravan minibus registration number MN 7663, in which they were travelling from Blantyre going to Mwanza, swerved and hit a roadside pavement.
According to eyewitnesses, those who died on the spot included a woman and two men who are yet to be identified.
A baby suspected to belong to the dead woman was thrown out of the minibus window and was found in a field close to the scene of the accident.
The baby was rushed to a hospital for medical attention.
Most of the passengers were businesspeople who buy commodities in Mwanza.
Bishop Zeka from the nearby Malenga Village who helped to rescue the victims told The Daily Times that people from the surrounding communities did a good job by rendering a helping hand to those who were trapped inside the bus.
“I was in the maize field when I heard a loud bang. I rushed to see what was happening and that was when I found it was a crashed minibus with people inside shouting for help. There was blood all over and I had to call other people to help rescue those injured. A woman and two men died here on the spot but we did our best to get others into vehicles to rush them to Mlambe Hospital,” Zeka, whose clothes were stained with blood explained.
Owner the minibus, Wilbert Chiluzi, said he was shocked and depressed but thanked God that other passengers have survived.
“I could not believe it at first, hence I had to come to see for myself. It is a big setback for me as you can see the minibus was new but you cannot predict an accident. The good thing is that God has helped to save the other lives.
“Otherwise, I am liaising with the police to see what will be next,” Chiluzi said.
Lirangwe Police confirmed the incident but referred The Daily Times crew to Chileka Police. Responsible officers at Chileka Police were said to be out to a funera
