Three people have died while one is missing after a boat they were in capsized on Linthipe River in Salima District on Saturday afternoon.

Salima Police Public Relations Officer, Jacob Khembo, said the incident happened in Traditional Authority Pemba.

“We received a report that a boat carrying people from Nyanje Village, sailing on Linthipe River, to the other side of the river, had capsized and that four people drowned. So far, bodies of three, among the four, have been recovered,” he said

Khembo said the boat carried 15 people and that when it reached the middle of the river, it capsized after the peddler lost balance.

“Some divers managed to rescue six women who could not swim. One female identified as Ninjilu Fedson aged 19, is yet to be found and the search still continues,” he said

Khembo said postmortem at Maganga Health Centre revealed death was due to suffocation

The other deceased persons have been identified as Nachisale Chiumbe, 25, Rabecca Charles, 30, and four-months-old Patuma Sumali.

Police have since urged people to adhere to precautionary measures that the police and Metrological Department disseminate to avoid such accidents.
