Mighty Tigers have received a timely boost ahead of their TNM Super League match against Mighty Wanderers at Mpira Stadium in Blantyre on Sunday after securing a K30 million season-long partnership with Waka Waka soft drink producer, Mother’s Foods Limited.

The partnership will see the company paying players’ salaries, game bonuses and rentals.

Mother’s Foods will also be responsible for players’ and team officials’ transportation for the rest of the season.

The company’s director Riaz Sattar said they were excited to partner Tigers.

“This is the first time we are partnering a football team and our expectation is to see the team performing better than last season. We will try to support them on and outside the pitch as we also promote our newly introduced brand, Waka Waka drink, which has already hit the market,” Sattar said.

Tigers Technical Director Robin Alufandika described the deal as a timely boost ahead of the Wanderers match.

“We have been beggars since 2016 when Azam decided against renewing sponsorship. This is a big and timely relief to everyone in our team. This sponsorship will help us be competitive this season. We now have the energy to fight for silverware,” Alufandika said.

Tigers midfielder Oven Mwakapenda said the players were motivated to deliver in the new season.

“We will give out our all during the Wanderers match. The sponsor has challenged us to do more for the sake of the Waka Waka brand. The team has been sailing in trouble waters financially for many years and the coming on board of Waka Waka will surely make a big difference.

“We are starting with the Wanderers game. We promise to give out our best on the pitch to get the result. We will play to impress our new partners and we are geared for Wanderers. Our opponents should know that they are playing us at a very wrong time when we are fully charged up,” Mwakapenda said.

Tigers have, for the past five seasons, heavily relied on handouts, with temporary relief coming from finances generated by player sales.

Some of the top players the club has produced are Stanley Sanudi, Peter Cholopi, Bashir Maunde, Peter Katsonga and Bright Munthali.
