First Choice Tigresses are this season’s Rainbow Paints Blantyre and Districts Netball League champions with a game in hand.

Tigresses defeated Imosys Netball Club 60-27 at Blantyre Youth Centre on Monday to collect 38 points from 19 games, having maintained their perfect run.

However, Tiga as Tigresses are fondly called, have secured the title with a game to spare courtesy of superior goal difference [300].

Deposed champions Kukoma Diamonds cannot score more than 300 baskets and concede none in two games to defend the title.

Diamonds were in action against Imosys as we went to press yesterday. Their final game is against designate champions.

Tigresses Coach Peace Chawinga-Kaluwa said it was a remarkable feat to win the championship with a game to spare.

“We are happy that we have finally won the title that has been eluding us for the past few years. It is even sweeter to note that we have done it with a game to spare and at a time when we are now financially stable following our sponsorship from Lilongwe Dairy Limited,” Chawinga-Kaluwa, who is also Malawi National Netball Team Coach, said.

During Monday’s game, Tigresses featured a strong side that controlled all the departments.

They led 15-6 in the first quarter before increasing the lead to 30-9 at half time. Tigresses finished off Imosys in the third quarter, when they increased the lead to 42-21.

Meanwhile, Diamonds Coach Noel Mussa has admitted that they cannot stop Tigresses from winning the title.

“Honestly, we can’t score more than 300 goals and avoid conceding in our remaining two games. This season belongs to Tigresses,” he said.
