Tigresses draw in opener

Giants Tigresses started their campaign for the Rainbow Paints Southern Region Netball League title on a rather scrappy note when they were forced to a 39-all draw by Prison Sisters at Blantyre Youth Centre.

The giants also finished last in a four-member Kukoma Invitational Tournament played last weekend.

Tigresses have roped in youngsters to rebuild the side with centre Beatrice Mpinganjira and wing-defender Cathy Yikwanga among the few available senior players.

Other senior players, including shooter Sindie Simtowe-Msowoya and Captain, Grace Mwafulirwa-Mhango, are unavailable due to several reasons.

Prison Sisters Coach, Pemphero Ntalika, said it was a good start to their ambition of breaking into the top-four this season.

“Two seasons ago, we had a steady rise when we beat Thunder Queens. However, our progress suffered a setback but we are now on track. This draw has given us the confidence that we can do better this season,” he said.

Tigresses Team Manager, Helene Mpinganjira-Tasosa, said their focus was on rebuilding.

“Our mission is to give exposure to these players. We are starting from a scratch,” she said.

In other games, Thunder Queens beat Young Professionals 115-8 whereas holders, Kukoma Diamonds defeated Chilomoni Sisters 83- 27. Serenity Stars beat Shizaella 52-25.
