Tigresses fume over Lauren Ngwira

Tigresses have lodged a complaint to Netball Association of Malawi (Nam) over reports linking their star player, Lauren Ngwira, to top English netball side, Hertfordshire Mavericks.

Ngwira, alongside compatriot Sharo Kaiche of Thunder Queens, have been listed as Mavericks’ players to feature in the Fast5 All- Star Tournament on September 23 in London.

The pair has been linked with Mavericks following local netball icon Mary Waya’s visit to England.

The former Malawi National Netball Team shooter has been hired as Mavericks’ Shooters’ Coach.

Tigresses’ Team Manager, Helene Mpinganjira-Tasosa, said they lodged the complaint because they felt there was something sinister behind the scenes.

“We don’t think that a team as professional as Mavericks can take a bold move to announce that they will feature our player [Ngwira] as part of their All-Star [squad] without communication with the association,” she said.

Mpinganjira-Tasosa said Tigresses were supposed to be involved in the discussion as per article 37.6 of Nam constitution.

The article states that a parent club shall authorise Nam to release a player to another team.

“In this case, we are the ones that are supposed to communicate to Nam to release the player,” she said.

Nam General Secretary, Carol Bapu, confirmed receiving a complaint from Nam but reserved her comment.

“I won’t say much because we are equally in the dark,” she said.
