Lilongwe Dairy Limited has, through its First Choice Milk brand, rescued one of the country’s oldest netball clubs, Tigressess, after announcing a K30 million three-year sponsorship agreement with them
The sponsorship is worth K10 million per year and the the team will now be called First Choice Tigresses, ending a seven-year sponsorship drought.
Tigresses’ players, dressed in gold and black attire, welcomed the sponsorship unveiling ceremony in Lilongwe by singing and ululating.
The company’s marketing manager, Gabriel Phiri, said it was an historic moment for them to partner Tigresses.
“We, a company, are proud that the sport has played a key role in the development of the country. A winning brand shall always look for a winning team; hence, our first choice for the team. In Malawi, we can’t write netball history without Tigressess, so we believe that the team will do well in the country,” Phiri said.
Netball legend, Mary Waya, graced the occasion as the guest of honour in her capacity as Director of Netball in the Ministry of Labour, Youth, Sports and Manpower Development.
She expressed her gratitude to the company for the timely sponsorship.
“It has come at a good time as netball, in general, is in a sponsorship drought at the national level. This is the best moment for netball and we appeal to other companies to support netball,” Waya said.
In her remarks, Tigresses Manager, Hellen Mpinganjira-Tasosa was on cloud nine and promised to give back to the sponsors.
“We have got a challenge to be first choice in whatever we do. We are going to deliver and fight for trophies,” she said.
Formed in 1974, Tigresses have won several accolades in defunct Airtel Netball Cup, GOtv and Presidential Netball Championship.
Tigresses were last sponsored by the late State president Bingu wa Mutharika.
