Time has come for poetry to shine—Q Malewezi

Renowned poet Qabaniso Malewezi popularly known as Q has said that time has come for poetry to stand out and be counted.

The poet, who has been in the forefront helping in propelling the creative industry, said this ahead of the launch of his spoken word album titled People on April 2 at Bingu International Conference Centre in Lilongwe.

Q Malewezi, who has also travelled places and represented the country in several international poetry sessions said the country has made strides in poetry and that the stage is now set for it to bring forth high profile events.

He described his spoken word launch as a top event that will see people paying K5,000 for standard tickets and K10,000 for VIP.

While poetry in vernacular has been attracting huge audiences, Q said poetry in all the angles has taken shape and that he was happy that people are valuing the art.

Q has excelled and shown his verve in spoken word which is a style of entertainment involving performance-based poetry that primary focuses on the aesthetics of word play and storytelling.

On his spoken word album, Q said it explores different aspects of humanity, the good and the bad.

“I will collaborate with a few artists, both poets and musicians during the launch and so I can’t wait to get on stage on April 2, 2016,” he said.

Q added:

“The event is highly ambitious but I think the time has come for poetry in Malawi to stage such events. I have an amazing line of poets to celebrate the day and their diversity and styles is one thing to look out for,” he said.

Q also said that he is getting a good response from individuals, organisations and companies and “it’s showing that the time to support our own has finally arrived.”

Meanwhile Q Malewezi, who also spearheads Qoncept Creatives which has brought in the country several international artists, has expressed gratitude to some of his friends who he said had bought tickets for young people to patronise the launch.

“ I would like to express my deepest gratitude to a number of friends who are buying tickets for young people who wouldn’t have had the opportunity to come to the show. So far 40 tickets have been secured to go to the young people at Children of The Nations and Growing Ambitions,” wrote the poet on his Facebook page.

The launch will bring on stage poets of different styles including Robert Chiwamba, who has won the hearts of many people with his poems.

Last year the poet released his latest album titled Kwa Mai Chiwamba and just recently he dropped two poems speaking on the issue of homosexuality including ‘Takana Mathanyula.’

The platform will also see the presence of veteran poet Benedicto Wokomaatani Malunga famed for poems ‘Siananso Awa,’ and ‘Ndizakutengala Kunyanja Ligineti.’

The other poets performing are Vangile Gantsho, Menes la Plume, Emmanuel and Phindu Banda, Sabrina Tambala and Julius Banda.
