Times Group Sports Desk members had a pleasant surprise yesterday when the company hosted them to a luncheon at Protea Ryalls in Blantyre.

Times Group Managing Director, Leonnard Chikadya, said the arrangement was made to congratulate the desk for winning six awards for good coverage of the 2016 TNM Super League.

The award winners are Peter Kanjere, Pilirani Kachinziri, Mphatso Malidadi, Mabvuto Kambuwe, late Bonnex Julius and Williams Gondwa, who excelled in various categories.

Chikadya commended the winners for a job well done and called on them to continue working hard to achieve more success.

“As the only media house with all the platforms, we should be aiming high at all times. Our ultimate goal should be winning international awards like CNN. But I am very proud of our sports desk for the great achievement,” Chikadya said.

Times Group Editor-In- Chief, George Kasakula, said the Sports Desk is one of the most efficient and professional departments under the company.

He said the company has never doubted the desk’s ability to win awards in any competition and challenged the team to beat its own standards.

“This is a very proud moment for us as a company. It shows that we have a very competent team in the Sports Desk. We will continue to motivate them so that they continue winning,” Kasakula said.

Speaking on behalf of the team, Sports Editor, Peter Kanjere, thanked the company for the luncheon and pledged to lead the desk to more success in future competitions.

He said the desk succeeded because of team work and disclosed that the next target will be to win Media Institute of Southern Africa awards.

Members of the desk were accorded the honour of inaugurating the company’s newly-acquired staff bus and were driven to Ryalls Hotel with Chikadya occupying the front seat.
