Employees of Times Group, the oldest and biggest media house in the country, were on Monday treated to a Christmas and New Year party that saw seven employees awarded for their contribution to the company in 2015.

Speaking during the party, Times Group Managing Director, Leonnard Chikadya said the Group’s management decided to treat the employees to thank them for being part of the innovations that the company is bringing to the country’s media industry.

“This is a day of celebration. This is Christmas and New Year season. It is time for us to come together and reflect on our achievements and challenges in 2015 and plan for the year ahead. We have to be happy for the season,” Chikadya said.

The seven employees that received a K50,000 shopping voucher each include Head of Design Team, Thom Mvula, The Sunday Times Assistant Editor and Columnist Madalitso Musa, Malawi News Assistant Editor, Pilirani Kachinziri and Times’ TV presenter Brian Banda.

Others are graphic designer Snowden Kachimanga, Electrician Emmanuel Mphande and Cashier Wanangwa Banda.

Times Group, which turned 120 years in the year, added Times Radio to its strong folder of media outlets that include the two-year-old Times Television and Blantyre Newspapers Limited.

On the business front, Chikadya said the year was challenging due to high inflation rate and the continued weakening of the kwacha value against major foreign currencies.

He said if the government fails to come up with proper policies to move the economy from its current state, some companies will be forced to close.

Chikadya also said he hopes the donors will sympathise with Malawi and bring back their budgetary support.

He then said in 2016, Times Group plans to see Times Television broadcast through satellite.
