Times’ Mphatso Malidadi is new Swam boss

By Isaac Salima:

Times Group sports reporter Mphatso Malidadi has been elected Sports Writers Association of Malawi (Swam) President during the association’s annual general meeting at Mpira Village, Chiwembe Township, in Blantyre.

Delegates from all the three regions of the country converged at the Football Association of Malawi-owned facility on Saturday, when they deliberated on various issues.

The sports scribes generally agreed to revamp the body and make it more relevant, a task that Malidadi said would be his priority.

He said unity is of important if Swam is to remain relevant and drive its agenda.

“As elected office-bearers, we have been given a challenging task to revive Swam and make it relevant. Credit must go to those who were there before us. They did a great job for us to be where we are now. To revive the association, we need to be united regardless of our backgrounds.

“The problems which the association has been facing have been the same over the years. As a committee, we had our manifesto but now we have to plan together. We need to hold refresher courses so that we improve our efficiency professionally as well as hold fundraising activities to achieve our goals,” Malidadi said.

In other positions, Lucy Kadzongwe was elected vice President with Wesysylas Chirwa emerging victorious in the race for the post of General Secretary.

Pledge Jali is the association’s Vice General Secretary whereas Daniel David Dauda was elected treasurer. Japhet Thole was voted in as Coordinator.

Executive members are Rabson Woodwell, Sylvester Kapondera, Phinex Chidaya, Snowden Kadzakumanja and Joy Khakona.

Outgoing interim president, Leonard Sharra, called for cooperation among the new members. He urged them to work together and look for sponsorship for the smooth running of their operations.

Malawi National Council of Sports Administration Manager Henry Meleka, who was the returning officer for the polls, called for discipline among the scribes, saying they play a big role in disseminating information on sports.

Malidadi will hold the position for the next three years.
