Malawi’s leading Television station—Times TV— yesterday celebrated four years of broadcasting, an event spiced up with several events marking the day.
Times Group employees painted some classrooms at Jacaranda School for Orphans in Blantyre.
The Group’s Chief Commercial Manager, Dumisani Ngulube, said Times painted the classrooms as one way of giving back to the community.
Looking forward, Ngulube said the award winning station eyes bringing in more local content to give Malawians their right to access information.
“There are several things that our viewers should look forward to, content is one of them. We will continue to generate a lot of exciting content. We are going into the soccer space with a lot of emphasis and energy,” he said.
Jacaranda School for Orphans’ Head teacher, Phoebie Mewere, has since hailed Times TV for the gesture.
She said the classrooms were previously dirty but now pupils will be learning in a clean environment following the painting.
Later in the afternoon, staff members were treated to a luncheon which was spiced up by a live performance by Patience Namadingo.
In his speech, Times Group Managing Director, Leonnard Chikadya, said the year has been challenging, mentioning the issues of governance and vengeance on critics as detrimental to development.
Chikadya, however, acknowledged advertisers and other people of good will who have maintained business with the growing television station.
“Our advertisers are the people who have shaped who we are. We are not funded by the government but, rather, our content is what motivates our listeners, viewers and readers to continue doing business with us,” he said.
Times TV started beaming on December 11 2013, and has won Media Institute of Southern Africa (Misa) Malawi Chapter best television station award since it was introduced.
In July this year, the leading television station was launched on the platform of Digital Satellite Television beaming on channel 296.
