TNM explains poor services in the Northern, Central regions

AFFECTED MANY—Part of the building that caught fire

Telecom Networks Malawi (TNM) plc has said the fire that gutted down Malawi Telecommunications Limited (MTL) Microwave Building in Lilongwe on Tuesday, affected service delivery at its Network Monitoring Centre.

The company indicates that it lost its backhaul links to various cities and towns in the north and central regions and towards international internet network as a result of the fire.

TNM Head of Brand and Marketing Communications, Louis Chipofya, said most of the links are provided by its partners.

He said the company is working towards restoring all its mobile service operations, which the fire accident compromised.

“Voice and data services were impacted for [the] Northern Region and almost all rural districts of Central Region from Tuesday evening.

“TNM also lost about 70 percent of the internet backhaul capacity leading to lower than normal experience for internet browsing and video services,” Chipofya said.

He said currently the company has managed to restore services in parts of Salima, Kasungu and Lilongwe.

Fire gutted down MTL offices at Area 3, Lilongwe, last Tuesday evening destroying equipment for most broadcasting stations in the country and the host MTL.

The cause of the fire is yet to be established.
