Tonse Alliance partners meet today

Tonse Alliance partners are expected to meet today at Kamuzu Palace in Lilongwe, three days after President Lazarus Chakwera excused Vice- President Saulos Chilima from delegated duties.

Chakwera took that course of action after getting a situational report from the Anti-Corruption Bureau (ACB) which, according to the President, lists the Vice President among those suspected to have had contact with United Kingdom-based businessperson Zuneth Sattar.

Almost all alliance partners have confirmed the development.

Some of the alliance partners described the meeting as crucial as they are eager to know the future of the alliance following the suspension of Chilima’s delegated functions and alliance partners’ failure to be meeting regularly as agreed.

Former president Joyce Banda, who leads Peoples Party, said Thursday: “I can confirm to have been invited to the meeting.”

Alliance for Democracy Aford president Enock Chihana also confirmed the development.

UTM president Saulos Chilima is expected to attend the meeting.

Umodzi Party president John Chisi, while confirming that he would attend the meeting, said he is not aware of the agenda.

Malawi Congress Party spokesperson Reverend Maurice Munthali said it is the prerogative of the President to call for such meetings.

Munthali said, at such meetings, the President would brief partners on some key issues about government affairs.

Mzuzu-based political analyst George Phiri said calling for a meeting without a clear agenda is disastrous.

This is the first time the partners are meeting since last year.
