‘Top clubs chase Gasten Phodo’

Former Silver Strikers forward Gasten Phodo continues to attract interest on the local scene with two top clubs chasing his signature.

Phodo left Silver on Monday following a breakdown in discussions over extension of his contract and is now a free agent.

The player’s manager Felix Kholowa said Phodo will join a local club come next season but denied reports of a move to Nyasa Big Bullets.

“I also heard such rumours some months ago. This was at the time we were holding contract talks with Silver. What I can say for now is that we have had enquiries from four or five teams now, including the big clubs.

“But we are yet to have something concrete on the table. Nothing has been agreed with any club so far. We are also open to any international offer. Our options are wide open,” Kholowa said.

Silver Chief Executive Officer Thokozani Chimbali said they wish Phodo well as he ponders on his next move.

“We did everything we could as a club to keep the player but his demands were way beyond our reach, so we allowed him to leave. As a club, before every player enters the final six months of his contract, we open contract talks with him.

“This was the case with Phodo but he declined to sign the new contract we had offered him. We have therefore replaced him with Madalitso Maso from our youth team. Despite being young and inexperienced, Madalitso is a very good player and is already gelling with his teammates,” Chimbali said.

Phodo joined Silver on October 1 2019 and helped the Central Bankers lift the inaugural FDH Bank Cup.

He was a revelation last season with vital goals that saw him emerging as top scorer for Silver with 18 goals and five assists in all competitions.

He also finished as second top scorer in the TNM Super League with 14 goals, just a goal behind golden boot winner Hassan Kajoke of Bullets.
