SHINING LIKE A BEACON— Mvula

STATISTICS LEADER—Vinkhumbo

Malawi National Netball Team stars Towera Vinkhumbo and Joyce Mvula continue to stand out in various categories after United Kingdom’s Vitality Netball Superleague (VNSL) matches on Monday night.

The Round 10 statistics mean that the two icons stand a chance of finishing the 2022 season with individual honours as they continue to stake claims among the best five every week.

According to netballsl.com, Strathclyde Sirens’ Vinkhumbo leads the most intercepts category with 29, one better than Funmi Fadoju of London Pulse.

Vinkhumbo comes second to Fadoju in the turnovers category with 51 against the leader’s 62.

The former Kukoma Diamonds stalwart remains on top despite not being in action over the weekend as her team’s match against Severn Stars was postponed.

Vinkhumbo also appears on netballscoop.com’s statistics leaders of the week, where she shares the lead with Razia Quashie after amassing five intercepts in Siren’s 51-41 victory over Celtic Dragons.

The website credits her with seven of Sirens’ 14 gains.

However, her team is not performing well as well as she is individually as it sits ninth on the 11-member table with nine points from nine matches.

The statistics tell a different story for Mvula, whose team Manchester Thunder leads the table with 30 points after winning all the 10 matches it has played.

The former Blue Eagles Sisters prolific goal shooter is fourth on the top goal scorers’ chart, having netted 345 times. Surrey Storm and Ugandan shooter is the lead scorer with 431.

Netballsl.com describes Thunder’s attack as the best in the league after it trumped Loughborough Lightning’s best defence in a 66-61 win.

“A fast start helped Thunder stretch their lead at the summit to six points. In the end the decisive factor was Karen Greig’s ability to switch it up in the shooting circle.

“Both Joyce Mvula and Eleanor Cardwell shot the lights out and were expertly fed by Player of the Match Natalie Metcalf, a true triple threat at wing attack,” reads the website’s report.

The Queens star converted in 45 out of 49 attempts, earning herself a top rating of 92 percent in Thunder’s 51-48 win over London Pulse.

Mvula is expected to return to action on Saturday when Thunder take on Celtic Dragons.

The two Malawians will line up against each other on April 16 in Round 13 of the league.
