Total Malawi Monday handed over a renovated maternity wing to St Montfort Hospital in Nchalo, Chikwawa District.
Total Malawi renovated and furnished the wing to the tune of K15 million
Speaking during the official handover ceremony of the wing, Total Malawi Managing Director, Seggie Kistasamy, said Total Malawi cherishes working with communities in developing societies.
He said childbirth is a precious moment and it is sad for babies to take their first breaths in dilapidated maternity wings like what St Montfort previously was.
“Mothers of Nchalo will now have dignified childbearing experiences in the renovated wing. The wing is a wonderful gift to all mothers and prospective mothers in Nchalo,” he said.
St. Montfort Hospital Principal Nursing Officer, Violet Seven, said the hospital was facing numerous challenges in their work, operating in a dilapidated maternity wing.
“Women and babies were getting various infections which were being trapped in the torn mattresses. Other women were even shunning the hospital because it did not have conducive environment to deliver babies,” she said.
And Nduzani Malola, who had just delivered at the hospital, hailed Total Malawi for the renovation.
“The wing, its beds and mattresses were not good enough for small babies and postnatal women. We were getting infections but now we will be going home with our babies healthy,” she said.
St Montfort Hospital serves people from 68 villages of Traditional Authority Ngabu and Paramount Chief Lundu.
An average of seven babies are born at the hospital every day.
