Total Land Care donates to war heroes
Total Land Care (TLC) has donated 20 tonnes of sustainable rocket wood to war veterans based at Kamuzu Barracks in Lilongwe. The ex-service section has a total of 19 retired officers.
Making the donation, TLC Irish Aid Project Manager, Vincent Gondwe, said the company recognises the important role the Malawi Defense Force (MDF) plays in enforcing the law to protect the environment.
“Food security is an important issue and the role of conservation by MDF is in line with TLC objectives of sustainable environment management,” Gondwe said.
He added that TLC has been supporting communities in the catchment area of the Lilongwe River with tree seedlings as an alternative source of livelihood.
“Through this project, we reduced the distance they had to travel by 40 kilometers and assured them of a ready market,” Gondwe said.
Lieutenant Colonel, James Chilambe, who is the Commanding Officer, Administration Unit at Army Headquarters, said their greatest enemies are the people destroying forest resources.
The Food and Agriculture Organisation puts deforestation rate in Malawi at 2.8 percent per annum.
