Tourism industry for local travellers
The Malawi Tourism Council (MTC), a consortium of tourism operators in the country, over the weekend held an event in Lilongwe where they showcased services and products from tourism operators with the aim of wooing locals to travel and visit places of tourist attraction.
Travel agencies, hotel operators, airlines and many other companies and organisations in the tourism sector converged at Lilongwe’s Wildlife Center where they exhibited their services and products as part of activities for the World Tourism Month of September under the theme ‘One Million Tourists-One Million Opportunities.’
MTC executive director, Rosebill Satha- Sambo, said local visitors are important for the tourism industry and that the event in Lilongwe was aimed at sensitising people about what the industry has on offer.
“We want to encourage Malawians to visit tourism places but some of them might not know where to go and where interesting places are. This event provided people with an opportunity to know such places,” said Satha-Sambo.
Principal Secretary in the Ministry of Information, Tourism and Civic Education Else Tembo, who graced the event, said government’s focus is on making domestic tourism grow.
She said government is currently developing a domestic tourism strategy to help guide efforts of developing domestic tourism.
“We want to encourage Malawians to visit attractive places available in our currently,” said Tembo.
