Towera Vinkhumbo shines in Sirens defeat

By Mphatso Malidadi

Malawi National Netball Team goal defender Towera Vinkhumbo produced a stellar performance for Strathclyde Sirens as she was named player of the match but she could not prevent her side from losing to Team Bath 40- 57.

Sirens’ Facebook page hailed the former Kukoma Diamonds player for her incredible form.

“A massive congratulations to Towera who was awarded POM at yesterday’s [Monday] match. Towera’s defence was absolutely explosive. Could we be more proud?

“A hard fought match but unfortunately it just wasn’t meant to be with the final score being 40-57 to Team Bath. Sirens tribe thank you for coming out and supporting us. We’ll be back better than ever next time you see us,” the post reads.

Multitalented Vinkhumbo, who also plays football, paid tribute to her teammates.

“I’m so proud of the girls. Everyone put so much effort into the game. We were coming behind but we played relentlessly. It’s just unfortunate we didn’t win the game. I’m so happy and thankful for being Player of the Match, but at the same time I know it’s not for my own work, but from teamwork,” she told the same publication.

Meanwhile, her compatriot Joyce Mvula was on the winning side as Manchester Thunder slayed Celtic Dragons 59-50.

Goal shooter Mvula started the match and she benefitted from goal attacker Elenour Cardwell and wing attacker Natalie Metcalf services.

Thunder were in action against Severn Stars at Belle Vue Stadium as we went to press yesterday.

Currently, Thunder top the 11-member log table with 30 points from 10 games whereas Sirens are ninth with nine points from nine games.
