Treat restructuring with seriousness

The move by the country’s football governing body, Football Association of Malawi (Fam) to restructure its affiliate, Super League of Malawi (Sulom) which runs the TNM Super League, is long overdue.

Fam has been consulting Fifa on the issue and a taskforce has been formed to oversee the progress of the project.

Among other things, the project will see the league-runners having a fully-fledged secretariat with a permanent general secretary and an accountant.

Of course, Sulom General Secretary, Williams Banda, has reservations with the development and has asked for clarity on the objectives.

He thinks the agenda of the meeting should have originated from the clubs which are affiliated to Sulom not Fam.

Banda was also not happy with the idea of inviting the clubs to the function because Sulom represents all the clubs. Anyway, the bottom line is that Fam is determined to restructure Sulom using an expert from Fifa.

I have no qualms with that as long as this restructuring conforms to world football standards. Malawi soccer has been lagging behind because of failure to conform to the good tenets of running the game.

Malawi football administrators have always believed in running the game in their own way so that they should create room for confusion and corruption. No wonder, Club Licensing System has been treated by the clubs with contempt.

For a long time, the game of football has been regarded as a product of chaos because it has been administered without vision and this has negatively affected it progress.

Football administrators must be told in no uncertain terms that they should conform to the modern standards of administering the game.

It is, therefore, imperative that they take the proposals from the world football governing body seriously.

Indisputably, Sulom is one of the biggest affiliates of Fam and the bedrock of Malawi football, and there is need to have a well-structured secretariat.

It is, therefore, our sincere hope that the taskforce, comprising a galaxy of administrators, which has been put in place to be liasing with Fifa on the restructuring of the league, will show maturity and dedication.

I know some talentless and hopeless men who have been put in the football committee but failed to build on the promise they showed before they were entrusted with such a demanding task.

We do not need to be traumatised by those curses. This is an important project which all of us are waiting for with abated breath to see its fruitful conclusion.

Hate it or love it, what cannot be ignored is that football is dynamic and it is a big industry the world over. It needs to be administered with utmost seriousness.
